Our Natural Leather
For our high-quality Orangenkinder® house, crawling, and barefoot shoes, we use the highest quality natural leather.
Our natural leather is vegetable-tanned and chrome-free, making it particularly skin-friendly. It is characterized by its wonderful softness, feel, naturalness and beautiful colors.
We source the leather from IVN (International Association for Natural Textiles) certified tanneries in Germany. This guarantees that the leather is constantly checked in independent institutes and tanned and dyed according to IVN specifications. This gives us the certainty that the natural leather we use already complies with the current statutory guidelines.
The pods of the Tara tree and the Valonea oak are used as tanning agents.
Since our leather is open-pored and therefore breathable, it can even be composted without hesitation – a sign that it does not have a plastic coating like so many conventional leathers.
This offers a super healthy climate for small feet, meaning the feet sweat little to not at all. This prevents foot and nail fungus.
The fact that the raw hides of the cattle also come from Germany minimizes transport distances.
Leather is a natural product
Just like on our skin, natural features can also be found on the leather skin, which can arise during the animals’ daily stay in the pasture or in the stable.
Insect bites, scars from injuries, skin irregularities, mast folds – to name just a few natural features, give each natural leather skin its unique, individual stamp.
By the way: Leather tanning is a method that is thousands of years old, through which animal hides are permanently preserved. Chemical substances (of mineral or vegetable origin) are necessary for this – these have changed again and again over the centuries and are still constantly being improved and adapted today.
The vegetable tanning used in our natural leathers is more environmentally friendly, but the tanning process takes longer and is therefore more expensive.
Our natural leather summarized:
- Short distances due to raw hides from Germany
- Natural leather IVN certified – low in pollutants – complies with legal requirements
- Use of vegetable tanning agents
- chrome-free
- Certified low-heavy metal, harmless dyes
- compostable
